It appears that Mr. Bierce is unaware that mankind (not to mention all the other animals and plants on the planet) have been able, at least so far, to find adequate living space on the planet (and, therefore, a larger percentage of land has thus far proven to be unnecessary) and/or that humans, as well as living beings, require water and therefore it's probably a good thing that the planet is supplied with so much of it. And not only is water directly necessary for life, but also indirectly as well: it may be necessary for plate tectonics, which in turn is thought to be essential for life.
I know few ironies greater than the following: the majority* of atheists and skeptics that I have encountered on the internet will tout themselves as "freethinkers" (while stereotyping believers as unquestioning sheep), yet readily accept almost any idea- no matter how ridiculous- that is derisive of religion when even the most cursory critical examination would expose said idea as illogical.
*and please note that I said "majority", not "all".
